Madam,
In response to the letter from Liz Saville-Roberts MP regarding recruitment into the Army, she appears to have conveniently forgotten that young people can get married at 16 and that Plaid Cymru supports giving the vote to 16-year-olds, yet she chooses to refer to potential new recruits as ‘children’.
If young people are capable of understanding the complexities of political choice then surely it follows that they can also grasp the implications of joining the Armed Forces? I should imagine that any young person contemplating joining the Army has given it a great deal of thought and talked it over with their parents/family and the Army careers office.
My grandfather, father and brother all served in the Royal Artillery and I am tremendously proud of that fact.
As a Sgt Instructor with Clwyd & Gwynedd Army Cadet Force I can honestly say that our cadets are outstanding, some of whom have gone on to Harrogate Army Foundation College or the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.
I have spoken to countless ex-servicemen and women who joined young by choice and they all say it was the best thing they ever did.
Yours etc,
Louise Hughes, County councillor, Llanegryn.
