A GREAT-GRANDMOTHER has been left heartbroken after she was unable to access her favourite beach for the first time in 93 years due to a “dangerous oversight” by Gwynedd Council.

Joyce Currie has been visiting Fairbourne beach since 1925 and fell in love with the popular seaside village.

After visiting with her family every year for many decades, the great grandmother moved to Fairbourne 22 years ago in order to enjoy “the most beautiful beach around” on her own doorstep.

However, Joyce and her family were “concerned and very frustrated” when they watched hordes of holidaymakers and locals leave over the bank holiday weekend as there is no longer an accessible route to the beach for those with mobility problems.

Until last year, a slipway/ramp made access to the beach possible for those using wheelchairs, mobility scooters, or prams but, following its removal, now there is only a bank of stones standing between would-be beachgoers and the sandy shore.

Joyce was horrified by what she saw.

Gwynedd Council say the ramp was removed after it was left in a dangerous condition following storms.
