A MUCH-LOVED former Aberystwyth councillor who is recovering well at home after life-saving brain surgery has thanked people for their “overwhelming” support.

It was reported in the Cambrian News in July that Goronwy Edwards MBE, known affectionately as Groxy, was rushed to the University of Wales Hospital in the Heath, Cardiff, for emergency surgery due to a build-up of blood on the brain.

This came after Goronwy, 82, had a fall in Aberystwyth town centre in April, with doctors suspecting this was the primary cause of his injuries, which led to a number of subsequent falls.

Speaking to the Cambrian News this week, Goronwy revealed how close he came to not pulling through, with doctors at Bronglais Hospital fearing for his life and unable to transfer him by helicopter because of the potential effect of the pressure on his brain.

“I’m very lucky, you know — the doctors thought I wouldn’t make it because of the amount of blood between my skull and my brain,” said Goronwy, who served as both a county and town councillor for Penparcau for 44 years.

“It was a very scary experience, especially for my family. All the family were so worried about me.

“I lost the use of my right hand for a while — I couldn’t even butter my toast or anything."
