The future of New Quay Memorial Hall looks to have been secured by funding to the tune of almost £250,000 from the National Lottery.
Built in 1925 as a memorial to New Quay’s World War One fallen, the hall’s future looked bleak last year due to a mounting repair bill and lack of investment.
But the New Quay War Memorial Hall Rejuvenation Project have now landed a grant of £223,253 from the Community Facilities Programme which, together with funds raised locally by volunteers, means a total of just under £250,000 is now available to start repairs on the building.
“The next stage is to put in place a lease on the hall with Ceredigion County Council Trustee Committee,” said a spokesperson.
“This lease has been promised and terms agreed, but needs the final approval of the council trustees before work can start.”
Hall committee chairman Julian Evans said members were delighted to have secured the grant to renovate the 94-year-old building.
“We wouldn’t have been able to get the grant from any other sources as Ceredigion County Council – through austerity – would not have been in a position to fund the project,” he told the Cambrian News.
“I would particularly like to thank our treasurer, John Barrett, for putting together our successful grant application.”
The new hall committee was formed with a mission to rejuvenate the hall by repairing and improving its facilities so that it is a viable and self-sustaining asset for the entire community while at the same time encouraging its greater use.
