ABERAERON councillors have claimed the town looked “horrible, haphazard and unsightly” on the bank holiday.

And county councillor Elizabeth Evans said that the parking “chaos” over the holiday period was another indicator that Ceredigion County Council’s parking charges were too high.

Referring firstly to the bank holiday bin collection, she said: “It was haphazard – while refuse in some parts of the town was collected, the town centre clearly was not.

“If you’re going to say the collection service is going to be the same as usual then you should ensure that it is – and it obviously wasn’t.

“They didn’t collect black bin bags from the town centre with the result that it looked very unsightly. Perhaps they should go back to making the collection a day later.

“The overall cleanliness of our streets has deteriorated – there’s a lot of glass in the gutters and so on. I have asked for the street-cleaning machine to come out on a more regular basis."

Cllr Mair Harrison agreed the town centre’s appearance left much to be desired.

“On the bank holiday it looked horrible,” she added.

A Ceredigion County Council spokesperson said: “Some capacity and access issues, arising on the day, did have a localised impact on waste collections in Aberaeron on the August Bank Holiday Monday. Resources were prioritised and actions implemented to mitigate and respond as soon as possible.

“Waste collection services in Ceredigion are programmed and delivered on a county-wide basis. It is not possible, therefore, to make localised changes without affecting and impacting on the service as a whole.”
