In response to E Roberts, (Letters, 11 February), yes there were two regulars who were often swimming to the Target off West End.

One was Sam Barnes who lived on the front and had an Eagle in his garden. The second was Jack Barber who lived on Abererch Road.

Some people used to call him Jack AA, who was often seen on his motorbike.

The target was stripped off in the late 1940s - which were large corks, triangle shaped, some stored by the building yard and others by the Gantry.

Sadly a young lad swam to the Corks and lost his life.

Before they took the Gantry away, the harbour had a lovely bed of gravel.

We used to go fishing for flat fish with home made harpoons.

There were sea snakes and sea horses there as well.

Who can remember the MTB by the quay which was used as a Sea Cadet Training Unit also Garabaldy which was burned to get copper nails?

And the Sunderland aircraft which broke its anchorage in Llanfair and drifted across the bay and came ashore near Glandon Beach?

Hoping that E Roberts can get some reminiscences out of this reply.

Happy days.

Wilf, Abererch Road(now Penygroes)
