Women’s Institute
THE welcome was given by the vice president Jan Cole who was acting president for the evening; two guests were also welcomed. The meeting was held at the Memorial Hall on Wednesday, 8 June.Meirion was sung in Welsh accompa-nied by a backing tape played by Myfanwy Jones. One of the members who had been unable to attend our recent meeting Pam Cooper had sadly passed away. A minute’s silence in memory of Pam was observed.Best wishes were sent to Dorothy Harper who was still at the Madog Hospital. Minutes of the last meeting were read and also the county letter and all relevant dates were noted.Dates for the dining club were discussed but these were put on hold during the summer months.The Harlech Silver band will be holding its annual summer fair on 9 July, WI members will be serving tea there. Cakes were needed for the Artro group stall on Thursday, 7 July to be held at Barmouth. Members were asked to bake cakes, two helpers were also needed to help on the stall.After all business was concluded the guest speaker, Merfyn Thomas, was in-troduced who worked at the Dolgellau archives, he gave us a very interesting and informative talk, accompanied by a slide show of old photos of Harlech. Lots of information was forthcoming and questions were asked by our members who had fond memories of the old photos.Jan Cole, our vice president, thanked Mr Thomas on behalf of our members.The winners of an old book competition were: 1st, Jenny Dunley; 2nd, Joyce Wood; 3rd, Mavis Kershaw.The raffle prizes were won by Stella Calvert and our guest visitor Brenda.
Ladies choir
THE popular local Ladies Choir, Cán mi Gei, will be performing in St Tanwg’s Church, on Friday, 24 June at 7.30pm. Refreshments will be available. Come along and listen to this talented choir, conducted by Ann Jones. They will be singing varied programme, which will include some traditional Welsh songs.
