An Aberystwyth woman has braved a headshave to raise money for a cancer charity to support her brother-in-law who has been diagnosed with a terminal form of the disease.
Debbie Hyde’s brother-in-law Kevin O’Neill was diagnosed with bladder and prostate cancer five years ago, and Debbie decided to have her hair shaved off in a bid to raise hundreds for Cancer Research UK.
Debbie, a 59-year-old grandmother, said that Kevin only has months to live, but is “staying positive”, and that she decided to raise money for Cancer Research UK because “too many people are taken too soon.”
“Kev went through a course of chemotherapy and after five years of regular check-ups he was given his final CT scan,” Debbie said.
“This scan showed three cancerous tumours on Kev’s left lung and surrounding lymph nodes.
“The lung had to be removed as soon as possible.
“Kev continued with three months of chemotherapy only to be told that the chemotherapy hadn’t worked and the cancer had spread to the other lung and surrounding areas.
“At this stage Kev has been given immunotherapy.
“This is not offered to everyone with terminal cancer, it is not a cure but may give Kev some extra time with his loved ones.”
After dying her hair pink, Debbie shaved her hair off with a fund-raising target of £2,000.
She has so far raised £791.
Debbie said that her brother-in-law’s advice to “anyone with cancer is to stay positive, keep going and never give up.”
“Kev is always the comedian and he said if you have made someone laugh or smile everyday then you have done a good job,” Debbie said.
