Ceredigion has the lowest rate of confirmed coronavirus infections in the whole of Wales.

The news was welcomed by Ceredigion AM Elin Jones, who herself has recovered from the virus.

“The lockdown measures seem to have so far shielded Ceredigion from high levels of infection,” she said.

The latest data available from Public Health Wales shows that only 31 Ceredigion patients’ tests have come back positive.

That’s a rate of 42.5 cases per 100,000 members of the population - the lowest in Wales. The Wales average is 202.3.

Only 259 tests have been carried out on Ceredigion patients so far. But tests are currently only being carried out in hospitals, so the burden of infection in the population as a whole is likely to be much higher, and Miss Jones has called for more testing.

“Ceredigion has statistically the lowest level of infection in Wales,” she said.

“But we want to see higher levels of testing and especially moving to a system of community testing. We’ve been promised higher levels of testing but this has been slow to appear.

“I would want to see a drive-through testing facility in Ceredigion as soon as possible. More testing and tracing is essential before we start to move out of lockdown.”
