Bronglais Hospital had one of the best performing A&E units in Wales yet again in January 2020, figures have revealed.
While there was criticism that performance did not hit the targets, there were improvements across most major A&E units compared to the December statistics, including an improvement in Bronglais.
Bronglais had the best performing unit in Hywel Dda with 1,792 of the 2,303 patients that attended A&E being seen within four hours, a percentage of 77.8 per cent.
Only University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff performed better with 78.7 per cent of patients seen inside four hours, although that was a slight drop from the figure of 80.3 per cent in December.
Hywel Dda was one of the best performing health boards in Wales, seeing 72.7 per cent of patients in the major A&E units inside four hours, with only Cardiff and Vale Health Board having a better performance, but with only the major A&E unit at the University Hospital in the board area.
Struggling Betsi Cadwaladr was again the worst performing health board in Wales, with Wrexham Maelor the worst performing major A&E unit.
Just 58 per cent of patients were seen inside four hours in the three Betsi Cadwaladr major A&E units.
At Wrexham Maelor, 52.7 per cent of patients were seen inside the four hour target time, although Ysbyty Gwynedd saw 69.9 per cent of patients in the four hour target.
Despite those figures again missing the general target for waiting times, they were an improvement on the figures for December.
A Welsh Government spokesperson said there had been improvements, including the four-hour target time and ambulance response times to serious ‘red’ calls.
They said: “These improvements have been made in the face of extreme pressure.
“Last month was the second busiest January ever for our emergency departments.
“We acknowledge that too many people are spending long periods in emergency departments while waiting for a hospital bed, and expect the extra £40m we made available this winter to make improvements in this area.”
