A DEAL that will see Bupa continue to run a Machynlleth care home is good news for the home’s residents and their families, a local councillor has insisted.

Powys County Council has agreed an extension of the contract with Bupa Care Homes Ltd for the company to continue to manage 12 residential homes across the county, including Cartref Dyfi in Machynlleth. The contract with Bupa was due to expire in May 2017.

Machynlleth councillor Michael Williams said he was pleased at the decision which he said would give residents of the home and their families increased security and certainty about their future.

Cllr Williams said: “This is good news. It gives residents and their families a bit of security. It’s the uncertainty that causes worry, so this gives at least a period of security for them while the council work on a system for the future.

“If I’m still a councillor at the time I won’t be voting for anything that causes problems with these homes. I think the current system works well.”

Powys council’s Cabinet member for adult services, Cllr Stephen Hayes, said the renegotiated deal would save the authority money with Cabinet members happy that it made “good business sense” with the council using the extended period to look at setting up a separate company to manage homes.
