CEREDIGION MP Mark Williams has urged Hywel Dda health chiefs to take action to stop cancellation of eye clinic appointments.

Mr Williams is backing a campaign by the Royal National Institute of Blind People to ensure that patients are not suffering delays in receiving appointments to address conditions that can lead to sight loss.

The RNIB has said cancelled appointments can lead to patients being put at risk of irreversible sight loss because frequent follow-up appointments are required for many treatments.

Aberystwyth’s North Road eye clinic has had a number of appointments cancelled, and Mr Williams said he wanted to see Hywel Dda do more to ensure that does not continue.

He said: “I support RNIB’s campaign to make sure people are given timely eye clinic appointments to ensure their sight can be saved.

“I will work with RNIB Cymru, other elected representatives and the Hywel Dda Health Board to ensure people in Ceredigion receive their treatment on time.”

Ceri Jackson, director of RNIB Cymru, said: “Patients must be seen by their eye clinic within an appropriate time for their condition. No-one should lose their sight needlessly because of cancelled or delayed appointments."
