CLOSING Llanidloes’s Maes-y-Wennol Day Centre would see elderly people lose out on the “good quality life” they have, thanks to support from the day centre, it has been claimed.

Marian Morris is urging Powys County Council Cabinet members to abandon plans to close the day centre, saying it would be a devastating blow to her father and could mean she’d have to give up her job at Machynlleth Hospital to ensure her father is properly cared for.

The council is currently considering the future of day centres and has suggested it wants closures as part of the authority’s efforts to save money.

But Mrs Morris said the care that her father receives at the centre has been a massive help to him and his family and insisted that, following the loss of his wife three years ago, the centre provided him with vital help.

In a letter to Powys Cabinet members she said: “I cannot tell you how important and vital this service is for us.

“My dad has been attending Maes-y-Wennol day centre for approximately 10 years and this is his life. He is diabetic, has leukaemia, is registered blind and suffers frequent falls, but the care and support that the staff give him keeps him living a good-quality life."

A Powys Council spokesperson said a consultation into day centres is still ongoing.

They said: “We will be starting the analysis work for the consultation shortly, but the consultation doesn’t close until 9 November."
