Six deaths have been recorded in Wales today, according to the latest Covid-19 figures.
Daily figures released this lunchtime by Public Health Wales show that 2,391 new cases of coronavirus have been recorded in Wales today, with the rate of infection nationwide now standing at 415.3 cases per 100,000 population.
Two of the six deaths recorded today have been in the Hywel Dda region of Ceredigion, Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire.
The total number of suspected Covid-19 deaths in Wales now stands at 5,688.
Of the 2,391 new cases, 43 have been recorded in Ceredigion with 122 new cases in Carmarthenshire and 95 in Pembrokeshire.
Gwynedd has recorded 105 cases today with Powys recording 94.
Hywel Dda Health Board reported on Thursday that it is seeing an increase in Covid-19 hospital admissions and is currently dealing with an outbreak of the infection on a ward at Carmarthen’s Glangwili Hospital.
Elective surgery has also been suspended at Prince Philip Hospital in Llanelli and Withybush in Haverfordwest.
Steve Moore, chief executive of Hywel Dda said: “We are still very much in this pandemic, which continues to disrupt our everyday lives, and unfortunately one of the consequences of this is that we are having to bring back temporary measures, including postponing some surgery in the short term, to ensure we can safely care for patients.
“The rise in cases in Hywel Dda shows that, whilst hospital admissions are not as high as in previous waves, Covid-19 remains a serious risk to our health and our health service.
“I’m appealing to everyone to continue doing their bit by sticking with the ‘keep safe’ behaviours that have been shown to reduce spread of the virus. Without your help, we will see more cases which puts individuals at risk and can disrupt delivery of public services here in west Wales.”
