Ceredigion has the fewest referrals for dementia in Wales, a meeting of the North Ceredigion Forum for Elderly Care held in Aberystwyth heard.

A lively meeting was mostly given over to an interesting talk given by Dr John Morgan, retired consultant psychiatrist and recent chair of Ceredigion Community Health Council.

Dr Morgan spoke on topics including the prevalence of mental health in society (one in four adults, also 1 in 10 children) and 31,000 diagnosed cases of dementia in Wales.

Ceredigion is also the Welsh county with the lowest number of referrals for dementia care services, begging the question whether many more vulnerable people are out there in society with inadequate support.

Also discussed was Hywel Dda’s current strategy of moving services increasingly away from hospital settings to the community and the particular problems this raises for rural Ceredigion.

There was also a lengthy question and answer session where many points were raised and addressed.

Following this, Dr Morgan was warmly thanked by forum chair Mark Williams.

Following recent communication from the leader of the county council, Cllr Ellen ap Gwynn, it was revealed that Bodlondeb remains sold subject to contract, which is no change in circumstances since prior communication in January.

It is intended that a public meeting be held by the North Ceredigion Forum for Elderly Care at Neuadd Goffa, Penparcau on 31 May.
