A Bronglais Hospital doctor is appealing for support to help save lives after she launched a fundraising appeal to have a defibrillator located on the A487 in Glandyfi.

Dr Nicola Allen, who works in the hospital’s surgical department, is hoping to raise £1,500 to enable a defibrillator to be placed in a lay-by at Glandyfi, close to Dyfi Junction station.

By hitting the £1,500 target, charity Welsh Hearts would provide a defibrillator and training that Dr Allen said could save lives.

She said: “One of the great things about living in Wales is that it’s fairly rural, but at the same time I often have a niggling feeling in my mind about emergency situations and access to healthcare.

“Working in the NHS, I know how important a quick response is to a collapsed patient, but I also know how access to a hospital can often be problematic.

“Having more of the public trained in how to respond to a collapsed person and having ease of access to defibrillators within communities can and will save lives.

“This is all about preventative and outreach medicine. It’s about what ‘could happen’ and being prepared for it.

“I’m sure there are many people who give the reason for wanting a defib because they know of someone who could have survived if it was available.

“I just don’t want that story. I’d like a story where someone survives because there was one available and a member of the public was trained how to respond.

“Yes, £1,500 is a lot of money to ask of people, but if it even saves one life, it’s worth it.”

As part of the fundraising effort, Dr Allen has launched a Just Giving page which is at www.justgiving.com/fundraising/glandyfidefib

Donations can also be made by texting ‘YRHE89’ with a cash amount to 70070.
