A FOUR-FIGURE sum has been raised in memory of a young boywho lost his life due to a rare condition.

Deian Glyn’s family, who live in Dolgellau, have raised over £1,000 for the Community Children’s Nursing team in Caernarfon and Wrexham Maelor Hospital’s Children’s Ward in memory of the five-year-old.

Deian was cared for by the team, before he passed away on 2 July, 2016.

Deian was born with a congenital condition which affected his growth and also caused epilepsy and affected his immune system.

Following their tragic loss, his parents, Gwenyth and Roger Savage, raised funds in Deian’s memory and have since donated £650 to the Community Children’s Nursing Team and also Wrexham Maelor Hospital’s Children’s Ward.

Gwenyth, who works as an occupational therapist at Dolgellau Hospital, said her family were extremely grateful for the support they received from the nursing staff.

She said: “The Community Children’s Nursing team and the nurses at Wrexham Children’s Ward were extremely supportive and provided Deian with excellent care.

“We, as a family, are very grateful for all the support received from the community team to care for him at home despite his complex nursing needs.

“This allowed Deian to remain in the comfort of his home and for his siblings to enjoy precious times with him.

“They also supported him to attend the local Cylch Meithrin, when his health allowed this.

“Without their nursing support he would not have had the opportunity to mix with his peers which was extremely valuable for him.”

The funds provided has enabled the nursing team to purchase sensory equipment for use in the community with other children receiving care and support by the team.

“We recently met with the team at Bodfan at Ysbyty Eryri in Caernarfon to present the equipment,” added Gwenyth. “We are very happy with what they have decided to purchase with the donations and I’m sure it will help many other children in the community.

“I’d like to thank everyone who has donated to ‘In Memory of Deian’, we are very grateful,” added Gwenyth.

Jo Douglas, clinical service manager acute paediatrics and neonatal, child and adolescent health, said: “We are very grateful to Gwenyth, Roger and their family and friends for the generous donation to the Community Nursing Team in special memory of Deian.

“The team was privileged to support Deian and his family at home and humbled that they wanted to support other children that the team care for.

“The sensory equipment we have purchased in Deian’s memory will be enjoyed by other children who receive support at home from the team.

“The items chosen were things that Deian especially enjoyed, and seeing other children benefit from this generous donation of funds is very positive for staff as well as the children.”
