A leading Bronglais Hospital consultant will retire in March, it has been confirmed.
Dr Phil Jones will retire at the end of March, although will continue to carry out some clinical work on a reduced basis until August.
However, campaigners have said they fear that services could be reduced, especially care for patients with Parkinson’s Disease.
The announcement has prompted Hywel Dda Health Board to start work on a “succession plan”, with deputy chief executive and director of operations Joe Teape saying the health board will also be looking to recruit a care of the elderly physician and an acute stroke physician.
Dr Jones paid tribute to the staff in place in Bronglais and in mid Wales for their commitment to health services in the area.
He said: “I am proud and honoured to have worked with a dedicated team of doctors, nurses, therapists, support staff and managers looking to sustain and develop health services in mid Wales – there really is nowhere else that is so focussed on patient care across all staff groups.
“It has been a privilege to be a part of the team providing health care for the population of mid Wales.”
Mr Teape paid tribute to Dr Jones, saying: “Dr Jones has been a truly fantastic servant to mid Wales and Bronglais, including a spell as hospital director and has made a huge contribution over many years."
