People across the country are waking up their first day of virtual lockdown following tough new measures to combat the coronavirus, outlined by the Prime Minister last night.

Boris Johnson addressed the nation at 8.30pm last night, outlining a new raft of measures to combat the spread of the disease.

The measures - which include the closure of all non-essential shops, a ban on non-essential travel, and people only being allowed outside in public spaces to exercise once a day - were also enforced in Wales by First Minister Mark Drakeford following the announcement by Mr Johnson.

People may now only leave home to exercise once a day, to travel to and from work where "absolutely necessary", to shop for essential items, and to fulfil any medical or care needs.

Shops selling non-essential goods have been told to shut and gatherings in public of more than two people who do not live together will be prohibited.

If people do not follow the rules then police will have the powers to enforce them by dispersing groups and issuing fines.

The government is also stopping all social events, including weddings and baptisms - but funerals will be allowed.

Restaurants and cafes can remain open for food delivery and takeaway, along with supermarkets, food shops and pharmacies.

Petrol stations, hardware stores, launderettes, pet shops, newsagents and post offices will also all be allowed to remain open along with banks.

The new measures came in to force at midnight.
