A LLYN woman’s weight-loss journey inspired her parents to follow suit and improve their quality of life in their seventies.
Kate Knowles joined Slimming World last year and lost one stone and 12 pounds in 19 weeks. This inspired her mum to join the group.
The food-optimising programme meant changes to her parents meals and very quickly both parents, who are in their late 70s, had lost over two stone each in weight and became the lightest they had been in years.
Both parents have suffered health issues but the weight loss has speeded up their recovery.
More importantly, her dad was able to leave hospital and be cared for at home, as her mum was able to help him out of bed and down the stairs each day.
If he had been at his pre-Slimming World weight that would have been impossible and would probably have resulted in a much longer stay in hospital.
Kate says her own weight loss has increased her self-esteem and give her inner confidence as well as a boost in energy and a zest for life.
She said: “It’s never too late in the year to start a new year resolution. The Slimming World food programme called food optimising is based on sound healthy eating principles which help you lose weight without feeling hungry or guilty about having your favourite treat or a glass of wine. I have never felt deprived, have eaten all of my favourite foods including curries and even chips!
“I have learnt new recipes and have even discovered how much I enjoy eating breakfast and the wonders of a fruit bowl.
“There are many reasons to lose weight. As well as looking good and feeling better, the health benefits cannot be underestimated.
“Almost every day the news is full of information about unhealthy lifestyles and the effect that is having on the UK’s long-term health.”
Almost 40 million people in the UK and Republic of Ireland are said to be overweight or obese, and more than 13 million people are so overweight that it seriously affects their lives – and the numbers are rising.
The growing number of people with serious weight-related health issues, including type 2 diabetes, heart disease, joint problems, self-esteem issues and certain types of cancer, is placing even greater stress on our health service.
So if you are looking to lose weight to become healthier or just so you look great in that swimsuit this summer why not start your new year’s resolution this Saturday.
Kate’s Slimming World group meets at Pwllheli Sports Centre, Bodegroes Lodge, every Saturday at 8am and 10am.
Kate said: “The hardest thing I had to do to lose weight with Slimming World was to walk through the door; from there on I have been motivated and supported every step of the way.”
