A NEFYN mother is urging parents to consider baby organ donation after she tragically lost her son at just four days old from a heart defect.
Ffion Jones and her partner Paul Jones’ son Bobbi Rees died in May 2014 after he was diagnosed with Artioventricular Septal Defect (AVSD), which meant he had a hole in the middle of the four chambers of his heart.
Since their devastating loss, the couple have vowed to raise awareness about heart defects and have been raising funds for Alder Hey Hospital in Liverpool.
Ffion now wants to raise awareness about a change in legislation, which means that organs from babies of all ages can be donated.
She said: “We are so pleased that there has been a change in the legislation in Wales and that you can now ask if the parents of a child under two years old would like to donate organs.
“This will give so many innocent children a second chance.
“Many will choose not to, and I can understand their reasons, but I do urge parents to at least consider it.
“If Bobbi had stayed stable we most certainly would have looked for a heart donation for Bobbi and if we’d have found one we would have most certainly accepted.
“You grab any chance for survival when your child has a life-threatening illness.
“Sadly, it just wasn’t meant to be for Bobbi, but he is making such a difference to people’s lives with spreading awareness and raising funds in his memory. We are very proud of him.”
Since their son’s death the couple have raised over £16,000 for a number of charities in Bobbi’s name and have vowed to continue fundraising and raising awareness this year.
Ffion added: “We have raised around £16,000 so far and we will definitely be carrying on.
“We plan to do fundraising in February for CHD Awareness Week and in May for Bobbi’s second birthday.”
