Nearly 600 new cases of coronavirus have been recorded in Wales in the last 24 hours according to Public Health Wales.

Gwynedd has recorded 14 new cases today (Monday) taking the county’s seven-day total to 72.

People in Gwynedd have been warned to follow social distancing rules or the county will face a local lockdown.

Ceredigion has recorded seven new cases today, taking the rolling seven-day total to 27.

Carmarthenshire has recorded 20 new cases taking its weekly total to 108; Powys has recorded seven new cases, taking its seven-day total to 35 and Pembrokeshire has recorded nine, taking its weekly total to 21.

In total, 596 cases of coronavirus were confirmed by Public Health Wales today, with no new deaths.

Giving the daily statement, Dr Giri Shankar, incident director for the outbreak response at Public Health Wales, said: “Local restrictions are now in place in Bridgend, Caerphilly, Cardiff, Conwy, Denbighshire, Flintshire, Merthyr Tydfil, Neath Port Talbot, Newport, Rhondda Cynon Taf, Swansea, Torfaen, Vale of Glamorgan, and Wrexham local authority areas, and in Llaneli.

“These arrangements are necessary in order to bring transmission of the virus under control in these areas. It is very important that we abide by the regulations in the areas in which we live, and that we do not travel between local authority areas without a reasonable excuse.

“We are now also seeing an increase in cases in Gwynedd, and for that reason we to urge people to continue to follow the public health guidance: self-isolate when asked to do so, stay two metres away from others, and wash your hands regularly. These actions are essential in reducing spread of the virus, protecting older and vulnerable people, and keeping Wales safe.

“Following the introduction of restrictions in the borough of Caerphilly, our data is beginning to show a downward trend, and although we cannot categorically say this trend is a result of lockdown, we are cautiously optimistic and we are looking at a number of alternative sources to validate these results.”
