POLITICIANS in Blaenau Ffestiniog are calling for the health board to protect the memories of the men a health centre was built to honour.
There is concern in the community that the Betsi Cadwaladr Health Board wants to sell the old physiotherapy clinic on Towyn Road.
This building was built as a memorial to 54 young men from the Ffestiniog area, who had lost their life in the second world war.
And also money for its construction came from residents of the area, most of whom were quarrymen on a very low wage.
At Ffestiniog Town Council’s last meeting, councillor for Diffwys and Maenofferen Glyn Daniels tabled a Notice of Motion.
He proposed that Ffestiniog Town Council writes to the health board asking them to consider not selling the building but to give the building back into the care of the community with the intention of transforming it into a memorial museum or community building.
Cllr Daniels said: “Considering why the building exists in the first place, I think there is no reason for the council not to support this motion.”
The community council voted in favour of the motion.
A local campaign group has also garnered the support of regional UKIP AM, Neil Hamilton.
