Aberystwyth’s Bronglais Hospital consultants are to step in to give a nine-year-old girl her life-saving epilepsy medication following an issue between her parents and Machynlleth Health Centre.

Seren Hughes used to have up to 100 seizures a day until brain surgery in 2016 and prescription medication helped to control her condition, but last week her parents were told that Machynlleth Health Centre could no longer prescribe their daughter’s medicine.

Seren’s frantic mum and dad said they were shocked by the decision because their daughter has been receiving her prescription from Machynlleth for years.

Speaking to the Cambrian News, mum Ruth said: “Mach doctors are not going to write prescriptions for Seren.”

The issue came to a head on Monday when doctors visited Seren’s worried family at their home.

Following that, Ruth said the matter had been resolved.

“We have had a meeting with Machynlleth doctors’ surgery this afternoon,” she said.

“Seren’s prescription and medication issue is in the process of being resolved.

“It will now be coming via Bronglais Hospital. The doctors have apologised profusely for the way the matter was handled.”

A spokesperson for Dyfi Valley Health said: “We have apologised directly to Seren’s parents for any stress and anxiety we have caused them throughout this process.”
