PLAID Cymru plans to reorganise health authorities in Wales are strongly opposed by GPs and would be disastrous, the Liberal Democrat’s Ceredigion Assembly candidate has insisted.
Elizabeth Evans said the plans drawn up by Plaid and the party’s shadow health minister Elin Jones, the current Ceredigion AM, were rubbished by GPs in a survey launched by Welsh Liberal Democrat leader Kirsty Williams, with responses from GPs insisting it was an “awful” idea.
One of the questions included in the survey was whether GPs in Wales would support a shake-up of health bodies by scrapping health boards and having management of all hospitals under one body.
Two-thirds, 66 per cent, of GP surgeries which responded said they opposed the policy, with just 23 per cent supporting it and 10 per cent unsure. A total of 21 per cent of GP surgeries responded in the survey.
Cllr Evans said: “The response from GPs is resounding: Plaid’s plans would be a disaster for patients in Ceredigion.
“Our NHS needs another reorganisation like it needs a hole in the head. Having not learned from the last time they meddled in local health services, Plaid want to abolish all health boards and run hospitals like Bronglais from Cardiff."
