Fears over the future of Porthmadog’s GP service have been allayed after four new doctors were appointed for the area.

Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board took over the management of the former Meddyg Care GP Practice after the surgery’s doctors terminated their contract to provide GP services at the end of September.

Dr Melfyn Edwards, who lives and serves as a town councillor in Porthmadog but is a GP in Criccieth and Pwllheli, had feared the surgery could be lost.

But now four new GPs have now joined the new Porthmadog Health Centre and nearby Criccieth Health Centre, which has been under the management of the health board for over a year.

Lowri Hughes, practice manager at Porthmadog Health Centre, said: “It is welcoming news for the community that four new GPs have been recruited to work at Porthmadog and Criccieth Health Centres.

“Three of those new GPs are also Welsh speakers along with Dr Arwel Parry in Criccieth Health Centre.

“We are looking forward to working closely with Criccieth Health Centre and improving the service we offer our patients together.”
