THE son of a popular Tremadog social worker who died last month will climb 14 peaks in 24 hours to raise money in memory of his mum.

Iago Rhys and his friend Tomos Elis Jones will take part in the Welsh 3000 in this month to raise money for Alaw Ward, a place close to both of their hearts.

Sian Rhys Elis, Iago’s mum, received special care there when battling cancer.

She died on Sunday, 13 June.

Elin, Tomos’ mother, continues to receive treatment and care at the Ward.

The pair have set up a fundraising page to raise money for the ward through the North Wales NHS Charity, Awyr Las.

Donations given through the charity will help to fund new equipment, better facilities, special projects and added patient comforts that go above and beyond what the NHS is able to provide.

The fundraising page explains: “As a sign of their appreciation and, above all, in memory of Sian both are keen to raise money for the ward.

“Both are also very grateful to Gareth Patchett, their former sports teacher for his guidance in preparation for the challenge.”

The pair set themselves a fundraising target of £1,000 but they have smashed that, raising £4,807 so far.

Derwen social worker Sian leaves behind husband Aled, 17-year-old son Iago, daughter Enlli, 15 and Gruff, 12.

Derwen said Sian “was a remarkable person and she will be greatly missed by us all in Derwen”.

“We share our deepest sympathy with her family, friends and colleagues,” they added.

Marian Parry Hughes, head of Gwynedd Council’s Children and Supporting Families Department said: “Sian was an integral member of the Children’s Service in Gwynedd.

“Her contribution to children and families was invaluable and made a huge difference to the lives of so many families.

“We feel a huge loss with her passing. As Sian’s colleagues and friends, our thoughts are with her family at such a sad time.”
