LAMPETER county councillors have welcomed the news that Ceredigion County Council highways officers have come up with an apparent solution to traffic issues along the A482 in College Street.

Last year traffic chiefs warned that illegal parking along the street was not only putting the public at risk, but also creating an obstruction and damage to the pavement.

However, town mayor Cllr Hag Harris objected to plans to install additional bollards, claiming they would only worsen traffic congestion and possibly lead to the removal of on-street parking.

Now highways officers have proposed a scheme they say will provide ‘essential’ pedestrian safety and a loading bay provision while minimising the loss of parking opposite along the college wall – and say works will start before April.

In an email to Cllr Harris and Cllr Ivor Williams they said they had identified additional parking on the northern end of College Street by amending traffic orders to reduce the length of the prohibition of parking whilst extending the limited parking length.

They added that in order to achieve this there would have to be a realignment of the existing pavement heading northwards from the loading bay to achieve a minimum 5.5m carriageway width while retaining on-street parking opposite.

“This may not be achievable in totality, but we will endeavour to do the best we can while trying to balance all requirements,” they added.
