A SCREENWRITER from Lampeter who regularly writes episodes of Hollyoaks has been nominated in the Best Single Episode category at next month’s British Soap Awards.
Roanne Bardsley, 29, will be attending the glittering awards ceremony at London’s Hackney Empire Theatre on Saturday, 2 June, which will be broadcast live on ITV.
“My episode will be competing against nominated episodes from Coronation Street, EastEnders, Emmerdale and Doctors,” Roanne – a former pupil of Ysgol Ffynnonbedr and Ysgol Gyfun Llanbedr Pont Steffan whose parents still live in Lampeter – told the Cambrian News.
“The episode I wrote is called Three Mothers, Three Daughters. It’s an exploration of teenage self-harm from the different perspectives of three mothers and three daughters, and was part of a wider self-harm issue story that is also nominated in the Best Storyline category.
“I was really thrilled to learn that the episode had been nominated. Teenage self-harm is a very taboo subject, but it’s a real problem and pretending it doesn’t exist won’t help, but talking about it might, and that’s what we were trying to do with this episode – start a conversation.
“So for the episode to be recognised with an award nomination is really heartening and I hope that it helps continue to raise awareness for teenage mental health.
“I’m also attending the BAFTAs with the Hollyoaks team later this month as we’ve been nominated in the Best Continuing Drama category, so it’s going to be a very exciting few months!”
