Madam,

Since winter storms blew some of their signs down in the last few weeks, one local firm of estate agents have had theirs redesigned and replaced.

However, I have noticed that, where they previously bore the Welsh words ‘Ar werth’ alongside (or on the reverse) of the English (for sale), the Welsh wording has now been omitted, leaving the signs proclaiming the English-only legend ‘for sale’.

It has taken many years, and much personal sacrifice, for Welsh signage to gain ground so as to be used regularly, even here in mainly Welsh-speaking Llyn. To abandon it in favour of English-only is a retrograde and shameful step. It shows lack of respect for our country, our community and our language as well as ignorance of and arrogance towards our traditions and way of life. Let me express the hope that this is a temporary aberration, and that these signs will be replaced by bilingual signs as soon as possible.

Yours etc

Dr Robyn Lewis
