Madam,
I would like to reply to Marie-Hélène Thomas’ letter with reference to EU waste.
In her letter, Marie-Hélène was replying to a letter about waste of £400,000 for a dog fitness centre by the EU.
I fear that this is just the tip of the EU waste iceberg.
I think we would be horrified at the EU waste. Something must be wrong as the EU has not had its accounts signed off for over 20 years.
Your correspondent is correct in pointing out the waste by UK governments. This, too, is eye-watering.
The TaxPayers' Alliance’s website makes very interesting reading. But, the amount our governments waste is not a reason to remain in the EU institution. The EU’s wasting of our money is one of several good reasons to leave.
Every single person in the UK - man, woman and child - pays into the EU coffers, whether an income-tax payer or not. One fifth of UK’s VAT goes into the EU budget.
Your correspondent mentions that she pays only £20 for automatic health insurance in 27 countries. I assume this is the European Health Insurance Card. Although this is valuable protection, it is not a replacement for travel insurance. You will pay the same as a citizen of the country you are visiting. So, if citizens of that country are expected to pay for medical treatment, you will too.
We are in a complete mess over Brexit due solely to our negotiating team being all arch Remainers (Boris Johnson and Michael Gove are not and have never been on the negotiating team).
The EU written ‘deal’, which is really a new treaty that the prime minister is peddling, is anything but a withdrawal from the EU.
Yours etc, Chris Samuel, William Street, Aberystwyth.
