Madam,
I refer to your article headlined ‘Campaign for extra-care home plan builds support’.
As a pensioner in my 81st year managing to live on my own (with thanks to the local Care & Repair scheme for installing hand rails etc, and Ceredigion County Council Social Services for a walk-in shower), I am not naive enough to believe that I will always be able to care for myself as the years hopefully come and go, and I may possibly need residential care.
Being aware of the intention to site a handful of extra-care homes on the Plas Morolwg site, situated on a one-vehicle lane with no pavements in the main in Pen yr Anchor, Trefechan, renowned for being one of the windiest areas in Aberystwyth, I ask how town councillor Brenda Haines can say, as you report, that “there would be no other options”, and also “the site would be close to services for residents”.
How ironic a statement when the nearest ‘services’ are three quarters of a mile away in Penparcau or Aberystwyth town, not exactly waking distance for the elderly or infirm with mobility problems, as Cllr Haines would be aware of.
In fact the old isolation hospital was situated in Pen yr Anchor, still standing as flats, which makes me give thought to a new name which would be more fitting of Plas Ynysiad (isolation).
Also ironic is county councillor Alun Williams’ reported statement of: “It is essential to build social housing in the town” - this from an Aberystwyth county councillor whose vote resulted in the closure of Bodlondeb Residential Home, Aberystwyth – the full impact of this recent closure yet to be realised with no alternative plan in place by the county council which any amount of social housing will definitely not replace.
Yours etc, Name and address supplied.
