A series of events inspired by the First World War will take place in Aberystwyth.

The events, organised as part of the Aberystwyth at War 1914-1919 project, will include a guided walk on Saturday, 4 May, led by project volunteers in period dress.

The walk will take in some of the town’s significant buildings of the wartime period, including the houses of several soldiers and the Red Cross hospital.

A theatre performance will take place on 16 and 17 May of Dot and Billy in the Aberystwyth Arts Centre.

Performed by a community theatre group and directed by Tom O’Malley, this is based on the wartime letters between Dot French, an Aber student, and Billy Burditt, a captain the Cheshire regiment.

A concert of popular First World War songs and music organised by the Ceredigion Music Service and performed by Ceredigion children will take place in Ceredigion Museum on 22 May.

The guided walk of Aberystwyth town will take place at 11am (in English) and at 2pm (in Welsh) on Saturday, 4 May. Booking is essential.

“We’ll be discovering significant First World War buildings and visiting some of the houses of those who served, and hearing some of the stories of how the Great War impacted on the community of Aberystwyth,” said Kate Sullivan, project co-ordinator and community engagement officer.

“The walks are free and open to all, and will start and end at the Ceredigion Museum, and will followed by tea and cake.”
