AN ABERYSTWYTH group said it is “massively disappointing” that their plans to take much-needed supplies to refugees in France were scuppered at the last minute over security fears.

Johnny Gaunt and Ian Bell, members of the Aberystwyth-based refugee campaign group AberAid, were due to join thousands of other people on Friday taking supplies to the ‘Jungle’ refugee camp in northern France as part of the Convoy to Calais event.

But citing security fears, the French authorities banned the convoy from entering the country, leaving the duo angry they would not be able to deliver supplies such as blankets and clothing to refugees, including children, living in the camp.

“Originally we were set to drive down to London today, to take part in the rally this evening which featured John McDonnell, John Rees and others,” Mr Gaunt told the Cambrian News last Friday.

“Tomorrow, the plan was to drive to Whitehall and take part in the Convoy of aid to Dover, where we would cross to France on the ferry.

It’s massively disappointing that the French authorities have chosen to continue their ‘security’ concerns by blocking this delivery of vital aid.”

The organisers of Convoy to Calais are challenging the decision to refuse the convoy entry to France, and supporters can sign an open letter they have produced. To sign this letter, visit www.bit.ly/28IqgIJ.
