A COUPLE are celebrating the first anniversary of a kidney transplant, which saw a devoted wife donate one of hers to her sick husband.

The celebrations of Gareth Davies, 53, and his wife Ruth, 54, come as the UK marks Organ Donation Week this week.

Speaking to the Cambrian News, the couple told of how years of dialysis at hospital in Welshpool for Gareth were finally over after Ruth took a chance and, despite all odds, turned out to be a match for her husband.

“Gareth has been on dialysis for three years needing a new kidney,” Ruth told the Cambrian News.

“We saw many people in a few hospitals, and finally when we were in Liverpool it was suggested I got tested on the off-chance.

“It turned out I was a match and I was so pleased to be able to donate to my husband.”

The couple, who met in 1991, have been married for 18 years, and Gareth has now returned to work three days a week with the hope of returning full-time in the near future.

“He’s doing so great,” said Ruth, who lives in Carno.

“He had no life before and I was just so pleased to be able to give him the chance.
