AN ABERYSTWYTH group are now on their way to ‘The Jungle’ refugee camp in Calais to deliver urgent supplies of food and offer their help and support.

Johnny Gaunt, 44, a radiographer at Bronglais Hospital; English literature student Abi Wren, 20; and international politics students Freddie Mackereth, 22, and Billy Kingsbury, 21, set off from Aberystwyth with a car and van full of food, camping and cooking equipment at 8am this morning, and spend four days at The Jungle camp in the French port town, where thousands of refugees and migrants are living in squalid conditions.

The group will help in various ways, including replenishing stocks of food and camping equipment, building and maintenance work, as well as talking to refugees and helping them learn English.

“I don’t want to get 10 years down the line and my children seeing what has happened ask ‘what did you do dad?’, and I have to tell them I did nothing,” said Johnny.

“I don’t really understand that mentality where people are very quick to say help our own first,” added Johnny. “Imagine you and your loved ones were there and imagine seeing the reaction in this country. The basic principle of humanity appears to be missing.”

Abi said: “I want to be a teacher, and children will look up to me, so I feel I have to help.”
