Editor,
Five weeks ago you revealed details of the huge loss-making staff canteen in Penmorfa, Aberaeron and I must say I was disappointed at the response from a largely complacent public with the exception of an excellent letter from George Holloway.
Setting aside the debate of whether the tight restrictions placed on the general public (which coincide with the downturn in profits) is to blame, the disturbing part of this fiasco is that if the 2017/18 loss of £31,000 appeared on the books, surely the matter should have been addressed there and then, and not allowed to fester and increase to £51,000 12 months later? Who is seeing these accounts?
In closing, I can’t help but mention the fact that if a swimming pool, a day centre or even a rural primary school had incurred such losses, the inevitable consultancy process would have been invoked, along with pending closure, but I can’t see this happening to a staff perk like a subsidised staff canteen, although it sounds like a good idea to me. And as George Holloway suggested, the court bring their own sandwiches to work!
As a rate-payer for over 65 years I feel fully justified to comment on this loss-making canteen, and look forward to hearing from Ceredigion on what process has been made in rectifying the situation.
