Madam,
I am responding to the letter by Mr T Jones (last week’s Cambrian News) regarding the speed of some vehicles on the A44. On Boxing Day my husband and I were returning to Wales at lunch-time after staying at my son’s in Nantwich over the Christmas holidays.
From the minute we got onto the A44 it was a nightmare - we had cars cutting in front of other cars forcing car drivers to brake. Then we were nearly forced off the road by some idiot who decide to overtake three cars in a very dangerous part of the road.
It was only thanks to my husband’s vast experience in driving and his quick reaction that he was able to take evasive action to prevent a head-on collision. Had he not been able to do this, we would have been forced over the top. Also there was a quick reaction by the driver behind us, who stopped before he ran into the back of us.
Needless to say we were all very shaken up and that’s putting it mildly. Further on we saw a car had just gone over a ditch and it was turned upside down. This was very recent as two recovery trucks were parked on the opposite side of the road pondering how to get the car out. Just as we were coming into Aberystwyth, yet again some young driver thought it was a good idea to overtake three cars and nearly cause a head-on collision.
That Boxing Day trip back to Wales is something I would never ever like to repeat. In fact I am now very very scared of going on the A44.
On Saturday, 20 February, the weather was appalling and there were bad driving condition.
We were on our way to Aberystwyth and a van decided he wanted to be at the front of the traffic and the driver overtook, yet again, three cars on a bend. The driver of the lorry coming towards him flashed his lights and then a car driver was forced to brake to let him in. It seems a lack of awareness of other drivers and never seeming to like to be behind other cars is part of the problem on a lot of country roads.
Yours etc
