TRIBUTES have been paid to a “brave” and “inspirational” young man from Bwlchtocyn who tragically passed away after losing his five-year battle with cancer.
Edward Fletcher-Brewer, 24, was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL) at just 19 years old.
The former Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor student, who studied at both Pwllheli and Dolgellau campuses, underwent two and a half years of treatment at Alaw Ward in Ysbyty Gwynedd, but in 2014 was handed a lifeline by his brother, Henry, who became his bone marrow donor.
The stem cell transplant was deemed a huge success, but sadly a few months later Eddie’s cancer returned in a very aggressive form.
His mother, Louise Fletcher-Brewer, has described how brave her son was throughout his treatment and how he never let cancer stop him from doing what he wanted to do in his life.
She said: “Even though Eddie was undergoing extensive sessions of chemo, and we were back and forth between Alaw Ward and The Christie’s in Manchester, we actually really did have fun.
“Eddie loved chatting to the nurses, he really did love seeing everyone at the hospitals – he always tried to make the best out of his visits and had a smile on his face.
“He absolutely loved rugby and supported the England rugby team – which created some banter between him and the nurses at Alaw Ward!
“Eddie was also a huge Manchester United fan and even got to meet some of his heroes during one Christmas at the Christie, which he was over the moon about.
“He also loved to sail and had the fantastic opportunity of meeting British sailor Ellen Macarthur through her cancer trust.”
Eddie passed away at home on Wednesday, 15 June surrounded by his family.
