THE inspirational tale of a Llyn man who continued to surf after losing his leg in an accident will be broadcast in the new year.

When Llywelyn Williams lost his leg, aged 16, after a collision with a car while skateboarding, one of the first things he wanted to do was to get back to the sea to surf again.

A moving documentary on S4C, Ar Frig y Don, follows his story as he travels the world and prepares to represent Wales in the World Adaptive Surfing Championship in La Jolla, San Diego – the first Welsh person ever to take part.

Llywelyn, from Bwlchtocyn, near Abersoch, was determined surfing would continue to be a big part of his life after the accident.

“I remember asking the doctor; please can I go into the sea? And once I got back into the water, I felt alive again and I knew that surfing was going to keep me going,” says Llywelyn, now 22 years old.

“Growing up in Pen Llyn, I’ve always been close to the sea. Two minutes either way from the house and I’m on the beach. From the first time I went into the water with a surfboard, I was hooked. I remember saying at the hospital that I wanted to do everything I could do before the accident – but better,” adds Llywelyn, whose dream is to compete in the Tokyo Paralympic Games in 2020.

In the programme, Llywelyn’s family and friends will relive the grim day of his accident and offer an insight into his perseverance as he returned to his first love – the sea and surfing – just six months after his accident.
