Madam,

Right here in Wales we have our own back-stabbing in full swing!

Here the victim is Plaid Cymru leader Leanne Wood, who faces a leadership challenge from the ‘crachach’ and reactionaries who believe Leanne’s socialist working-class background is too much for their sedate lives in the leafy suburbia of Cardiff North and other well-heeled enclaves.

It is not only Ms Wood’s working-class origins that have gone up the nostrils of her opponents, one has the sneaking suspicion it has more to do with the fact that she was a non-Welsh speaker.

Although I am not a member of Plaid Cymru, I have a lot of respect for Ms Wood, if only for the fact that she decided to fight the Assembly election on a first-past-the-post basis in the strong Labour-held seat, the Rhondda, rather than choose a safe regional ‘list’ seat. This in itself makes her stand out as a person with a solid sense of conviction, integrity and true grit.

So, is this goodbye to a unified Wales and back to the ghetto mentality which reaped decades of barren electoral results?

Yours etc,

Cllr Owain Williams, Llais Gwynedd, Pistyll, Pwllheli.
