MYSTERY still surrounds the origins of an apparent old smugglers’ tunnel discovered earlier this month beneath a New Quay newsagent’s.

David Edwards (seen in the passage, left), who runs the Ocean Blue shop with wife, Karina, stumbled across the secret underground passage after the basement storeroom flooded.

Hewn into the rock face, the tunnel – high enough for a man to walk through - travels for a distance of at least 50 feet along the back and side of the building towards the direction of the beach before reaching a dead end.
