BEACHWALKERS have been left surprised after scores of jellyfish washed up along the Meirionnydd coast.
Photos taken at Tywyn’s Dysynni Bridge showing dozens of jellyfish stranded in the broadwater led one local to suggest that “there were more in the water than I can ever recall seeing”.
The jellyfish should not pose a threat, however.
When asked about the phenomenon, a spokesperson for the Marine Conservation Society said: “Our national jellyfish survey is receiving plenty of reports of barrel jellyfish from west Wales and England.
“Barrel jellyfish are large, up to a metre in diameter, and weighing up to 30 kgs - but completely harmless, with a very mild, nettle-like sting at worse.
“This may well be a bumper barrel jellyfish year, although it’s still too early to tell. The last bumper years were 2014 and 2015 - and before that it was 2002.”
