JET SKI users are imperilling swimmers and dolphins along Tywyn’s shoreline, it was claimed this week.

“Irresponsible” jet skiers have been seen “chasing dolphins” and going near swimmers and surfers off Tywyn’s coast this summer.

The matter was raised in last week’s town council meeting by Cllr Quentin Deakin.

“Every time I see a jet ski they are always too close to swimmers or surfers,” he said.

“I’m not trying to stop people having fun, I just have some concerns.

“People have been hurt, and even killed, in accidents with jet skis – in Criccieth for instance.

“I think we should have a line of buoys separating the swimmers and surfers from the jet skis and a designated launching area."

Cllr Deakin then called for more stringent tests to make sure all jet skis are registered and encourage safe practice.

Cllr John Pughe agreed with his council colleague.

“There used to be separation some years ago, but that’s obviously changed now,” he said.

“It’s got worse since the [sea defence] island was built – I’ve seen people chasing dolphins on jet skis numerous times and coming in far too close. I’ve reported two incidents regarding jet skis myself this summer.

“One was with a jet ski right in the midst of swimmers and another occasion where two people came from the pub.”

Cllr Anne Lloyd Jones added: “Part of the problem is jet skiers coming over from Ceredigion."
