THE Cambrian News is this week launching the ‘Keep Aber Tidy’ campaign aimed at tackling problems of litter, strewn refuse, fly-tipping, dog fouling, and graffiti in Aberystwyth.

Joining forces with activists, councillors, business owners, and residents, we are asking you, our readers, to send us your photographs and experiences of environmental vandalism in the town.

The Cambrian News has reported on numerous such incidents over the years, with Ceredigion County Council confirming they do not employ officers to punish people who leave their rubbish out on the wrong day.

This paper has also reported on beach cleaning group Aberystwyth Beach Buddies’ efforts to keep the town’s beaches clean, and their calls for the council to take a more proactive approach to tackling litter hot-spots.

Sian Obermaier, of Aberystwyth Beach Buddies, said: “The volunteers have been working on protecting the beaches and bay for more than three years and have been asking for more pro-action from local authorities.

She said: ”Volunteers can only be expected to do much and certainly not to bear the brunt of protecting our beaches.

“The county council and the police also need to work together more to deal with these issues. Littering isn’t just an eyesore, it’s environmental vandalism.”

Discarded shopping trolleys in the Rheidol River have also featured in our pages, as has dog fouling and graffiti around the town, particularly in the castle grounds.
