It is not just Aberystwyth that suffers from ignorant, uncaring and irresponsible drivers throwing rubbish from their cars.

We live near Lampeter, half way between Aberystwyth and Carmarthen, both of which have McDonald’s restaurants.

Printing the registration number on each item is an excellent idea. When discarded packaging is retrieved, the information could be submitted to the relevant authority and a fixed penalty issued automatically. This is not necessarily going to prevent all littering, but must be at least be a deterrent.

Our village organises community litter picks, and I regularly collect McDonald’s cups and burger trays on my travels. It is so disheartening to see this unsightly mess returning to our beautiful hedgerows.

Wales is not alone in suffering from a worsening tide of litter, the majority of which is recyclable, and is also a danger to wildlife and farm stock.

Please people, just carry your wrappers home with you!
