LAMPETER Town Council is to host an open meeting to draw up a bid for the town to host the 2020 National Eisteddfod.

Town and community councils across Ceredigion have been invited to apply to hold the eisteddfod in their area.

The county council has asked for all applications to be submitted by the end of March.

That has prompted Lampeter Town Council to say it wants to see the National Eisteddfod return to Lampeter for the first time since 1984, with Cllr Rhys Jones saying it was a great opportunity for the town.

He said: “The National Eisteddfod hasn’t been in Lampeter since 1984 and we may not get another opportunity this good. I think this has to be a priority. The town council has to take this on and own it as we represent the town and can be neutral.”

After setting a date of Wednesday, 2 March, at 7.30pm for an open meeting, it was agreed that Cllr Jones should head a task-and-finish group of councillors to help get work under way.
