A former mayor of Machynlleth has criticised people who have “defaced” nearby Penrallt mountain with graffiti in memory of Tryweryn.

The valley near Bala was flooded in the 1960s to create a water supply for the people of Liverpool.

The original tribute near Llanrhystud has been hit by a spate of vandalism, sparking calls for the rock on the A487 to be made a protected monument.

Gareth Jones said: “As a first-language Welsh speaker I was appalled at the recent defacing of the Llanrhystud memorial.

“That said I fail to see how that act of grotesque vandalism justifies the spoiling of another Welsh landmark, which every person with their roots in Machynlleth regards with great affection.

“It can only be deduced that those anonymous people who defaced Penrallt have very little regard for Machynlleth and the feelings of those of us who have lived our entire lives in the shadow of that mountain.

"So much for their brand of warped Welsh patriotism.”
