Madam,

With reference to the flooding in Porthmadog (‘Calls for immediate overhaul of drainage system’) the Gwynedd Council spokesperson is incorrect to state it is the responsibility of landowners that watercourses and drainage systems are maintained and carried out.

This land is within the Internal Drainage District where there is responsibility on Natural Resources Wales under the Land Drainage Act 1991 to carry out the work.

It is rather unfair to apportion any blame on farmers and landowners in this regard.

Moreover, houses within the IDD boundary pay a levy on their council tax for the funding of IDD budgets.

The council spokesperson should be fully aware that his authority collects the rates, and pays a sum to National Resources Wales every year.

Yours etc,

Huw T Jones, county officer, Meirionnydd FUW, Llys Owain, Dolgellau.
