POIGNANT lanterns will be lit this Sunday to remember Porthmadog’s fallen.
To mark the centenary of the Armistice, 159 eco lanterns will be lit on and around the Bryn Coffa: one for each of Porthmadog’s fallen from both World Wars as well as one for the Unknown Soldier.
Organised by local ceramicist Richard Eastwood, 58, as a “thank you to Porthmadog”, the lanterns will be lit at the ‘going down of the sun’ on Sunday, at approximately 4.30pm.
Collection buckets for the Poppy Appeal will be present at the site.
“The lanterns will burn in gratitude to those who gave their lives, in gratitude for the peace of the present day and as prayers for peace in the years to come,” explained Richard, who moved to the area in 1969.
“I’ve been working with lanterns, all using locally sourced, sustainable fuel and fully recyclable, for six or seven years and wanted to do something for the town which has given me a job and a home for 50 years.
“I’m passionate about the lightness of our step on Earth and I’m truly grateful for the times of peace we live in, the peace which is a legacy of those who fought 100 years ago. Each flame is truly representative of each flickering soul of a lost soldier.”
